The Oak Creek Fire Protection District was founded in 1912. For 108 years the all-volunteer force protected the district. In November 2020, the district became a combination district hiring 6 full-time firefighters. The district now has 6 full-time firefighters, 3 part-time firefighters and 5 reservists.
The district also now has wildland firefighting division with 15 seasonal firefighters.

Nestled neatly in Colorado’s rich and fertile Yampa Valley, Oak Creek Fire Protection District is located in Routt County on Hwy 131, seventeen miles south of Steamboat Springs. The district’s population of just under 2,700 comprises a lively collection of people from local ranching families to folks from all over the country. The district covers approximately 278 square miles. There are two main concentrations of populations. The first is the Town of Oak Creek and the second is the neighborhoods of Stagecoach.

The town of Oak Creek was first established in 1904 as a major coal mining town. The towns population is just shy of 1,000. Along with the residence the town consists of multiple retail stores, several eating establishments and bars. There is the town hall, library, and the city run ice rink and mountain bike trails. The town is located on Hwy 131.

The neighborhoods of Stagecoach are located on County Road 16 stretching from Stagecoach State Park to Lynx Pass. The area is fast becoming a favorite for people making this there home, away from the hustle of the resort town of Steamboat Springs. The area is popular due to its vast views and mountain living.

This area is well known for its activities and attractions during all seasons of the year. During the winter downhill and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding, ice fishing, and snowmobiling top the list. During the summer road and mountain bike riding, hiking, camping, horseback riding, world class rafting and kayaking, and famous fishing top the list.

Our district is home to Stagecoach State Park. This is one of Routt Counties popular recreational sites. The park’s highlight is a 780-acre reservoir with a full-service marina. Here visitors can boat, watch the wildlife or fish for plump northern pike and rainbow trout. Hiking is available along the Elk Run Trail (on the south shore) and the Wetlands Trail (at the inlet). There is also a 15-mile trail that circles the reservoir and is groomed in the winter. Along with the State Park we also border Sarvis Creek National Wilderness Area, Medicine Bow and Routt National Forest.
